Adam and I both spent a good sum of money on our equipment, and we were glad that we did. Using old equipment or purchasing certain items used is alright, but I advise hikers to buy their major pieces of equipment new. Also, don’t just go to one or two stores. Spend several weeks reading reviews on the equipment you’re interested in, and try out different brands. I made the mistake of buying the first backpack I saw. It’s not that it was a horrible backpack, the Osprey was one of the most popular packs out on the trail. (My frame broke 1/3 of the way through the trip, but I got it replaced without much trouble.) Besides that, I didn’t spend enough time making sure it was the right fit for me. My waist belt was too large from the start, and the fit on my shoulders was loose. The EMS employees may have fitted me, but I don’t suggest trusting the opinion of a couple people. (It was obvious that I should have been fitted with a smaller waist belt.) Adam on the other hand loved his backpack. He had a lot less scars on his shoulders and hips than I did at the end of the trip, and it was because his backpack fit him well. "));

The further along we went on the trip, the more I felt that both of us could have made do with ultra light packs.  The “stripped down” Wingate was a good compromise though.  At about 5 ½ lbs. it did not lack in comfort, with good padding and support all around.  The extra weight of the frame and padding was worth it in my opinion.  I even hiked up Katahdin with it, rather than slack it with a day bag because it was so comfortable.  Unfortunately, if anyone is looking for this pack, I believe it has been discontinued. As I stated in the footwear section of this page, I chose Adidas Trail Runners based on the fact that I’ve been wearing the same model for years. I don’t advise others to use trail runners. They aren’t rugged and the padding lacks in comparison to a boot. However, Adam had extremely bad luck with his heavy duty hiking boots. I don’t feel I can give advice to what you should choose between. There is a middle ground between trail runners and heavy duty boots. Lightweight boots seemed to be what most hikers wore on the trail. And there are many different brands and models to choose from. So my best suggestion is to once again do your research. Read reviews and most importantly try on many shoes. You don’t want your feet hurting for 3 months after finishing your trip like I experienced, and you don’t want to hurt your shins like Adam.'));

After my injuries I decided not to lace them all of the way up, leaving the ankle support much looser.  Adding gaiters kept crap from getting in with them laced down.  I also added Superfeet insoles from the start, and this helped. The sole made these boots awesome.  Not as firm as the vibram soles, these still gave plenty of grip and I had an easier time than Kevin on the rocks.  My first pair; however, had problems and the left sole separated horribly from the shoe at the toe and along the foot.  I took them into REI and they swapped them out for me though.  One last thing is the waterproof gortex.  This was good as I could tramp through some mud and puddles.  In downpours, however, it would hold the puddle in my boot and then take longer to dry out.”'));

One container lasted both of us for upwards to 7 days (boiling 32 – 48 ounces a day).  The Teflon on the mess kit made clean up quick, and the spork was a necessity. (I also used a chemical tablet for a few days on the trail. I forgot the name of the company that makes them, but they should carry them at all outfitters. It worked pretty well for me when I was by myself. Each tablet boiled 16 ounces of water.)'));
